Shipping and Marine Events

The new bulk carrier Federal Bering recently called at Antwerp for three days to take on 20,000 tonnes of steel and project cargo (dryers and transformers).

“Lakers” of this type are specially designed to deal with ice on the Great Lakes of North America. From Antwerp the impressive vessel set course for Chicago and Burns Harbour where a large part of the cargo is destined for the car industry.

The Federal Bering belongs to the fleet of the Canadian shipping company Fednav and is one of the largest ships of its type with a length of 200 m. Fednav is due to introduce more of this new generation of lakers in the next few years.

Montreal-based Fednav is Canada’s largest ocean-going dry-bulk shipping company. Their fleet comprises close to 100 owned, long-term chartered and spot chartered vessels and includes a significant number of St. Lawrence Seaway-max-sized bulk carriers, Supramax, and Panamax vessels
