Montreal, Quebec, Canada, January 30, 2020

With unemployment at its lowest rate in decades, Montreal employers are competing vigorously to attract top talent. With the city’s strong economic outlook and attractive quality of life, Montreal employers are raising the bar by creating progressive workplaces through forward-thinking human resources policies. That’s the message from this year’s Montreal’s Top Employers competition, the winners of which were announced this morning by Mediacorp Canada Inc., organizer of the annual Canada’s Top 100 Employers project.

“Montreal is currently experiencing a renaissance,” says Anthony Meehan, publisher at Mediacorp. “The city has long had a unique blend of history, culture and cosmopolitanism that has made it an attractive place to live for people from around the world. But today, it also boasts one of the strongest economies of any city in Canada and is home to world-class employers in a wide range of sectors, from finance and technology to universities and health care.”

Last year, the Montreal region saw one of its lowest unemployment rates ever recorded, as employers competed to attract the most talented employees. The city’s economy also benefited from strong population growth, thanks in part to the presence of temporary workers and international students in the city, as well as significant public investment by the Quebec government in education, infrastructure and promising new industries.

“It’s also reassuring to see employers on this year’s list who have grown with the city they started in,” adds Richard Yerema, Editor-in-Chief of Canada’s Top 100 Employers. “Companies like Catelli Foods and Saputo, which started out small in Montreal, have grown into major employers that continue to invest in their employees and give back to the community. Today, they’re joined by new employers, particularly in the technology and finance sectors, who are making their mark not only on the city, but also on the world-class workplaces they’re creating in Montreal.”

Now in its 15th year, the Montreal Top Employers competition is a special distinction designed to recognize Greater Montreal employers who are leaders in their field by providing exceptional workplaces. Employers are evaluated by the editors of Canada's Top 100 Employers competition based on the same criteria as the national competition: (1) physical workplace; (2) work and social climate; (3) health services, compensation and benefits; (4) vacation and other time off; (5) employee communications; (6) performance management; (7) training and development; and (8) community involvement. Employers are compared to other organizations in the same field to determine which ones offer the most progressive and forward-thinking programs. The annual competition is open to any employer headquartered in Greater Montreal; employers of all sizes are eligible to apply, whether they operate in the private or public sector.

Established in 1992, Mediacorp Canada Inc. is the country's largest publisher of employment-related periodicals. Since 1999, the Toronto-based publisher has managed Canada's Top 100 Employers project, which includes 18 regional and specialty competitions reaching more than 15 million Canadians each year through a range of magazine and newspaper partners. Mediacorp also operates Eluta.ca, Canada's largest job search engine, which includes editorial input from Canada's Top 100 Employers and is now accessed by millions of users each year. Mediacorp also produces the Top Employers Summit, Canada's premier conference for senior human resources executives. This year's conference was held in November and featured a special performance by Coeur de Pirate, one of the most popular singers in the French-speaking world.

The full list of Montreal’s Top Employers for 2020 was announced today in a special magazine published in the Montreal Gazette. The reasons for the choice, along with hundreds of stories and photos of the top employers, were published by the editors today, and you can find them on the contest homepage.
