Montréal (Québec)
Le 12 octobre 2009
Three months into the new Hamilton-Montreal container feeder service, Sea3 Inc. weekly sailings are maintaining schedule integrity and new customers are continuously coming on board in placing capacity on the service, realizing value in utilization.
In addition to a number of steel sector customers, other cargoes and commodities are coming onside for service utilization.
Construction at the new terminal site at Eastport Pier 26 was completed in late August, including paving, fencing, security cameras and a new terminal office.
The seven-acre terminal has capacity for 600 TEUs (20-foot-equivalent units) including a storage area for empty containers, creating a new and much needed storage depot for Hamilton.
Since launching the service on July 3, terminal operations allied with existing Federal Marine Terminals operations at Pier 14 until the new terminal upgrades were completed.
The markets of Kitchener, Waterloo, Brantford and London can also be advantaged by utilization of service capacity. "It has been very encouraging to see the number of customers who have found the Sea3 service a valuable addition to their supply chain," said Hamilton Port Authority vice-president Ian Hamilton. A sampling of the current customers includes Sunrise Metals, Empire Steel America Inc., Canada Steel, Marex, Comage Container Lines, Taylor Steel, Peller Estates, Global Trade and Vincor.
The service has scheduled sailings to late December, completing the 2009 season in line with the closing of St. Lawrence Seaway navigation.
