Function: Reporting to the General Manager, the Superintendent will assist in daily operations by coordinating FMT terminal activities to best meet customer needs.

Management: (50%)

  • Supervise and coordinate all stevedoring activities of up to 150 union labour engaged in the loading and unloading of ship/barge cargoes as well as daily terminal/vessel activity (truck and rail loading/unloading)
  • Participate in the hiring of new union labour employees and for providing recommendations in regards to employee advancement, promotion, or disciplinary issues
  • Coordinate loading and unloading activities with the ship’s Master/Chief Mate and/or Port Captain
  • Communicate daily with union foremen for all labour hiring (stevedore and terminal)
  • Determine gear and equipment to be used during ship’s loading and unloading operations
  • Have knowledge of gear (wire slings/hooks/shackles/spreaders) working load limit (WLL) Responsible for gear inspection, disposal of damaged and outdated rigging, and purchasing replacement gear
  • Supervise and direct union labour responsible for cargo documentation during ship (OS& D reports/mates receipts) and terminal operations (dock tallies/US Customs clearances)
  • Supervise and direct all activities of the Assistant Terminal Superintendent
  • Promote and enforce company safety policy and OSHA regulations Coordinate drug testing when required

Operations: (50%)

  • Read and understand ship’s stowage and pre-stow plans; estimate hours for loading and unloading operations
  • Communicate and coordinate with customer and/or customer representatives in regards to their cargo concerns and any special requirements
  • Prepare reports for stevedoring and terminal activities Record minutes of daily hire meetings with labour foremen
  • Investigate and prepare accident and incident reports
  • Coordinate maintenance of company owned equipment with Operations Manager
  • Coordinate with Port Maintenance Dept for damage/repair/safety issues of Port-owned equipment
  • Assist Terminal Traffic Dept (fill-in), when possible, as requested by the Operations Manager/Traffic Manager/General Manager

Core Skills:

  • College degree (in Logistics/transportation/maritime industry, would be an asset, but we will consider other degree programs)
  • 1-2 years of stevedoring experience preferred
  • Able to work evenings, weekends and holidays
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to interact with union labour as well as many types of people
