Careers
MEET OUR EMPLOYEES

Trinh Vo McKay

I am a Concordia University graduate and have been working at Fednav since 1989 as a Programmer analyst.

I work as an Oracle Developer, and am involved in the development and maintenance of Oracle forms, reports, packages, and alerts for Oracle Financial, Human Resources, and Fednav Front Office systems.

I am proud of all I have learned. All life experiences and knowledge that I have acquired over the years help shape my thinking and my view of the world at this moment. There is a lot more to learn and I am always thankful every time I receive a new lesson.

At Fednav, the atmosphere is relaxed and the working conditions are great. Fednav's culture of constant innovation keeps me here year after year.

Tom Foubert

I am the Manager of Vessel Operations at the Fednav office in Antwerp as well as the Marketing Manager for Federal Marine Terminals in Europe. I have been with the company for eight years, commencing several years after completing an MBA at the Flanders Business School in conjunction with the Kellogg Graduate School of management in Chicago. I am particularly proud of having obtained my MBA; it was earned while working full-time over two years with a young baby at home.

On a regular day, I lead a team of three employees who are responsible for vessel operations in Europe and the Mediterranean. They liaise with port agents, captains, authorities, as well as the Fednav Montreal and Fednav Hamburg offices. My responsibility with regards to FMT is mainly market research and business development in Europe.

Working in a first-class company like Fednav, with an open mentality, gives its people the opportunity to develop and take responsibility. What I truly enjoy most about the shipping industry is its international flavour and the constantly changing challenges and evolution.

Julie Adam

I have been Payroll Assistant at the Fednav Group for four years. I am responsible for payroll for the salaried and the unionized employees in our seven U.S. locations. I am also the superuser for our new payroll and HR program, which entails supporting, maintaining, and developing the system. I have a college (CEGEP) degree in Administration and am currently enrolled at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), pursuing a Human Resources certificate. This field is suited to people who are detail oriented and who have a solid knowledge of U.S. laws.

Fednav is a family company that is focused on the employee; you're not just a number and that's what distinguishes it from so many other companies. Feeling special and having amazing employees to work with gives me a feeling of satisfaction.

The shipping industry was new for me. In it, I have discovered a great new world; I still learn something new about the shipping industry just about every week.

There are several things I am proud of: I implemented the new HR and payroll system called Oracle HRMS Business Suite for all our Canadian and U.S. offices. I worked for nearly two years with consultants on this project and it is presently functioning close to 100%. Fednav gave me the opportunity to grow and it, in turn, has given me the confidence to know that I am capable of more.

Louis Doutrelepont

I have been a Fleet Operator at Fednav's head office since April 1999, although I originally sailed as a deck officer on board two of Fednav's vessels. As an operator, my goal is to optimize time-saving and revenue, reducing costs while arranging voyage planning. This implies monitoring all participants (masters, agents, surveyors, etc.) and initiate preemptive or corrective action whenever required.

I was born in Liège, Belgium but moved to Canada, where in 1974, I enrolled at the Institut Maritime du Québec. I then sailed as deck officer and in the early 1980s, pursued a degree in Maritime Studies at the University of Wales and a post-graduate Diploma in Management of technology at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal. My career led me to work for several years as Operations Supervisor for the Canadian Coast Guard-Arctic re-supply programme. For a short while, I also taught at the Montreal campus of the Institut Maritime du Québec.

The aspect I like the most about working at Fednav is the people I work with. The singularity of the shipping business is appealing. Seeing one of "my" vessels passing by on the river, fully loaded with thousands of kilograms of grain bound for a foreign country, gives me a sense of pride and achievement.

The role of fleet operator is demanding; one must ensure that the job fits within their lifestyle and goals. For the right person, the fleet operator position can be very exciting, challenging, and rewarding.
